Imagine Seeing The Exorcist 40 Years Ago

Roughly 2 weeks away from Halloween but let's face it, October is all about Halloween. AMC has started their annual Fear Fest programming, giving you great horror movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, and my personal favorite The Exorcist.

This year is the 40th anniversary of The Exorcist. 40 years! And it's still scarin' the crap outta people. Can you imagine seeing that movie in theaters 40 years ago? I know I would have puked up Pea Soup and I don't even like Pea Soup.

Last Tuesday, The 40th Anniversary Blu-Ray of The Exorcist released and of course I picked it up. It's amazing reading the back story of The Exorcist. William Peter Blatty was recently interviewed by The Los Angeles Times, he wrote the story and released it as a novel in 1971. What people don't realize is, quoting Blatty, "The novel was dead on arrival." It took an appearance on The Dick Cavett Show, where Blatty talked about the novel for 45 minutes on national TV. He was only slotted for a short minute interview at the end of the show but things started happening with the previous guests. One too tipsy to go on TV. One guest up and leaving after the first commercial break. After the interview,  the book rose to #1 on the New York Times Best-Seller list, it ended up being made into a movie in 1973 and well, the rest is history.

Do yourself a favor and watch The Exorcist this Halloween. If you've never seen it before, I'd suggest not watching it alone.
