26 years ago this past week, easily one of the greatest video games ever made was released.
The Super Nintendo I feel is the best video game console of all time, and that’s not nostalgia speaking…I truly believe that. So many games on that console define it, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World, Zelda: Link to the Past, Super Earth Defense Force, Super Mario Kart, I mean….MAN….that’s just the tip of the ice burg!
But then there is one….one that stands among the rest as one of the more defining games on the platform that many STILL play today in speed runs…and that is Super Metroid, and it is 26 FLIPPIN’ YEARS OLD TODAY! HOLY CRAP! I remember renting this game as a kid, and during that time? I didn’t get it. It wasn’t until I got older that I really started to appreciate what it did for it’s time.
It’s TRULY an artistic piece of game design….from the opening, music, atmosphere, it’s a near perfect game!While it ranks up there as…like I said ‘near perfect game’…I can’t say it’s a pick up and play type of game. I do love it, but I wouldn’t toss it up there as one of my HOLY CRAP I GOTTA PLAY SUPER METROID RIGHT NOW! It’s something I gotta prep for and know that it’s not going to be just a cozy run through…because, it’s Metroid…it defines the word ‘backtracking.’
Even thought the game is 26 years old, it still stands the test of time as one of the finest achievements in video gaming.
