I have made the drive from Michigan to Iowa many many times…but last night was a night to remember. Ever have one of those drives home that just DOESN’T go to plan? Last night was that AND MORE! So where to begin…
Upheaval Fest was done, lots of fun and great times. But if my wife and I have learned anything, a visit home means we never actually leave on time…we are always an hour or two late. We got on the road about 4:30pm, which our plan WAS 3pm…so bad start.
We hit the highway, Lily was fed and all should have went great…until the first part where we hit highway construction in Indiana heading to Illinois, and it…was….horrible….stop and go for over an hour. Now, with a 6 month old? They don’t like that…so the crying began.
After that with my blood at a steady boil…we started hitting decent traffic, and THEN we started hitting the construction again going 55mph in some parts. Now it was getting dark, we are nearly 2 hours behind schedule and Lily starts LOSING it. We decide to hit a Jimmy Johns cause man I was tired of fast food, got off the highway around Joliet, ILL and headed there. It’s a large parking lot for privacy sake for Katie to feed Lily…but guess what….Jimmy Johns closed due to staff shortage. Annoying but ok…Subway is up the road…Lily still screaming, Subway closed due to staff shortage….MOTHER $(&$*!!! FINE WE’RE GETTING STUPID FAST FOOD! McDonalds says Dining Room Open! GREAT! I can go to the restroom, Lily can get fed, good to go….
Nope….dining room closed at 8 due to staff shortage….now I’m just annoyed beyond belief.
Get back on the road, Lily slightly fed (cause breast feeding you never really know…) and we search for food. Lily loses it AGAIN…and we find a Love’s where there is a Cinnabon! I haven’t had Cinnabon in years and dammit, I deserve one…I just need it. I get into Love’s and….CINNABON IS F&^ING CLOSED! AHHHHHHHHH!
Arby’s happens to be next door, so screw it…Roast Beed and a delicious Jamocha Shake….“Sorry sir the shake machine is broken.’
I hate everything….
Try feeding Lily, she KIND OF eats and you guessed it! Starts losing it about 45 mins down the road! Pull over to a Flying J, fill a bottle with formula and tell Katie to move whatever is in the back seat to the front cause I’m gonna feed her while she is buckled in and going! While I was in Flying J I got a Twix Cookies & Cream cause DAMMIT I deserve it!
Katie starts driving, I’m feeding Lily and she takes nearly the whole bottle…but…now she is tired and is losing her s*** cause well, that’s what babies do. About 2 hours out from home, she passes out…I’m crammed in the backseat and just miserably tired sandwiched between a car seat and a bunch of crap.
We got home at like 12:45am and THANKFULLY Lily transferred well into her crib still sleeping, I climbed into bed and passed out.
Yea….that sucked.
