1997 was a neat year.
I was 10 years old, prime video gaming life of the Nintendo 64 and this newcomer to the world named Sony Playstation. Now I had heard about this Final Fantasy series when I was a kid, but never really knew what it was all about…until, Final Fantasy 7 popped about….and man, it became THE game you had to play that year.
That was 25 years ago (in Japan that is! It hit North America in September)
But why? Why was it so popular? Simple….advertising.
This game was made to look huge, big, futuristic, and unlike anything you had ever seen at that time and damn, did they knock that out of the park. This game was 3 disc long, loveable characters, engaging storyline…we hadn’t really seen anything like it yet. Probably my biggest example of this is the fact that my friends brother, who ONLY played sports video games…got into it.
I mean that’s saying something right there. EVERYONE got into this thing called RPGs…and thanks to the success of FF7? RPGs began to FLOOD onto the PSX, and we haven’t really looked back since. This game is so beloved that it became it’s OWN franchise with movies, action figures, and even getting it’s very own remake which melted faces ever.
25 years of one of the most important games ever.
