As you probably know, I travel to Michigan pretty frequently.
EVERY YEAR, my wife and kid travel to Ludington, MI for our annual camping trip. We look forward to it every year, especially Katie. This year especially as June and July were just insanely busy, so taking a camping trip was something we were very much looking forward too! Now the camping trip? Went great! Getting to the camping trip though? That’s a different story.
We left Friday from Waterloo to Michigan City, IN…we take a small break if we leave late at night cause that drive can get pretty brutal for a 1 1/2 year old, so we get a quick hotel room.
EVERYTHING was ready to go so the moment Katie got out of work, she’d get home, basically jump in the fully packed car and GO! We decided to hit McD’s for a bite and I went to my GPS to get to the hotel from Hotels.com….but I made a BIG MISTAKE! I booked the hotel for the WRONG DATES! Great….so I tried to rebook for that night and of course, NO ROOMS AVAILABLE! So I cancelled that room and looked at another hotel we’re not fond of, but it’ll do for the night. Hotels.com app had it for a discount so I typed in my credit card number and it would NOT go through for the life of me…I tried SEVERAL TIMES and it just wasn’t working. I tried then the website and something was wrong there too! It just WOULDN’T WORK!!!
So, I bypassed that said ‘F*** it’ and called the hotel to book….to which they sent me to a god d*** call center where they did their bookings and they ended up charging me $40 MORE cause I went through them and ended up signing me up for their STUPID REWARDS to where I get 8 different emails now! Whatever….it’s done, I have a room, golden. Then it was time to drive….
Happy days as it was dark and a severe thunderstorm decided to slow us down to a halt, throw our hazards on cause we couldn’t see a damn thing throughout most of Iowa.
Top that off with a fussy kid that just REFUSED to fall asleep in the car and had those angry cries which makes you feel so bad for putting your kid through this torture of driving late at night. I have had plenty of folks tell me it’s best to drive at night cause then your kid will just sleep at night right? Nope, not Lily…that means be angry about being tired and not actually falling asleep.
18 minutes out from the hotel and guess who decides to fall asleep? Lily….like COME ON MAN! I get to the hotel in Michigan City and go to the front desk and they tell me, ‘Ok wait 5 minutes I have to see if the room is clean.’….awesome….5 mins later she comes back, and tell me ‘The room is clean, but there is a problem. The handle to the toilet is broken off, so you’d have to remove the tank lid and pull the chain.’
Visibly tired and whatever I said ‘Fine, I can flush a toilet.’ We got a King bed room cause we figured to save time we could have Lily sleep on the bed with us and save time setting up the Pack-N-Play. We got up to the room as mediocre as always, got Lily into PJ’s and attempted to sleep. Katie used the bathroom to which she discovered that the toilet has NOT BEEN FLUSHED! So that begs the question, if they couldn’t flush the toilet, WHAT DID THEY ACTUALLY CLEAN IN THIS ROOM!?!
We laid in bed and Lily would not stop moving, it was 1am now and she was wide awake! After an hour of coaxing her to sleep and just proving unsuccessful, I gave up and headed back down to the car, got the dumb Pack-N-Play, set it up, and it took 5 mins? AND LILY PASSED RIGHT OUT!
