The generation of Playstation 4 and Xbox One are coming to a very slow end.

Some games are still coming to those platforms, but I bet by the end of the year, the PS4 and XB1 will officially be the ‘old’ consoles. It happens every generation, and there is no doubt that the PS4/XB1 generation will go down as one of the last good ones. I say that cause really, the PS5 and X Series X are just ‘improved’ over the previous ones….faster and crisper graphics from the PS4/XB1.

I went the PS4 route this generation, and so did a lot of people as it is a Top 5 greatest selling game console of all time now. But what were the BEST games on the platform in my experience? Maybe you’ll agree or disagree or I never played your favorite, but these I feel were the best of the best.

5. Final Fantasy 7 REMAKE

The fact that this game exists is awesome. When I first saw the tech demo they did for Playstation 3, like many we wondered ‘What if right?’ Then it became reality with Playstation 4. It’s a unique eye candy experience seeing of my favorite games get the remake treatment. It may not BE the FF7 we grew up with, but it’s a worthy game to try out.

4. Dead by Daylight

This is a horror fans dream of a game. Characters like Michael Myers, Leatherface, Nemesis, Pyramid Head, all make cameos here along with some great original killers. Grab 3 friends and survive a killer…it’s tense, a different outcome each time, and it stays fresh with content. So much so that I re-bought the game on Xbox Series X so I can continue to play it!

3. DOOM (2016)

I have always been a fan of DOOM since I was a kid. Playing the first game on a Packard Bell computer was a fun experience…but this latest version of the game is intense, controller gripping, and is EXACTLY what DOOM always was…grab a gun or chainsaw and kill some damn demons! Near….perfection….when I got my PS4 years ago, this was the first game I wanted and no regrets. You might be wondering why I didn’t say DOOM: Eternal, while an excellent game for sure…I wasn’t happy with the complex upgrade system, I just wanted to kill demons, and DOOM (2016) did exactly that.

2. God of War

This could easily come up as one of the greatest games of all time at some point, it’s just that good. While it could help to play the original games, this is the definition of a FULL experience. The story of Kratos and BOOOOY kept my attention incredibly well and the way the game is designed to keep you IN the game is near perfection. One minute you’re running along and then a cut scene SEEMLESSLY plays out, it’s cinematic perfection. I’m not an open world type of gamer, but this was one just linear enough to keep your attention and see the vastness of the world Santa Monica studios created. It is a MUST play…just damn dude….so good….can’t wait for GOW: Ragnorak.

  1.  Resident Evil 2 (remake)

This is what I call nearly a perfect remake of a game. As you probably know, I love Resident Evil…especially 2, and 2 is considered by many the best in the franchise. So how do you take something that is so beloved and make it better for new and old fans? This…this is how you do it….and it’s incredible. The graphics, game play, inventory management, difficulty is ALL there. The Capcom team capture EXACTLY what the RPD Station would be like in that instance….dark, scary, lurking around the corner, while also keeping it incredibly engaging. Also the redesign of Mr.X/Tyrant is glorious…when you first encounter him, it’s that ‘CRAP CRAP CRAP!’ feeling he’ll always give you. I have re-bought this game 2 more times now….which you probably think, ‘Why Ned? Why are you wasting your money?’ PC I can do mods, Xbox I wanted it on my upgraded hardware….and cause of that I have replayed is multiple times and it still feels like a fresh experience.

Some honorable mentions of course:

  • Grand Theft Auto 5
  • Detroit Become Human
  • Overwatch
  • Resident Evil 7 & 8

PS4 I feel like may be my last ‘true’ gamer experience, it’s the last console I had before my family started to grow and other things in life have taken over. Watching NES go to Super NES was a mind blowing experience, but watching PS4 and XB1 go to PS5 and XB Series X? Just not as impactful as it was back when gaming was growing. I’m happy to see what is has become and I feel that PS4 may be the last of the big ones for me.

Unless you’re Nintendo, then you keep innovation as a priority, and that’s just cool.
