Funko Is Dumping $30 Million Worth of Pops in a Landfill

Well, that’s interesting.

You probably have one, two, ninety of them….hell I even have a few from Ghostbusters, KISS, and Back to the Future…do you know where I have them? Sitting in a box and doing nothing. Walk through a GameStop, Wal-Mart, Target and I PROMISE you will see most of them on some sort of clearance.

The place that makes em, Funko announced that they are in fact DUMPING into an Arizona landfill over $30 Million dollars in Funko product. The hell? Why would you do that???

You can read more about the whole thing HERE.

Oddly enough, this is actually standard practice when big merchandise corporations….if there is just too much product? It’s more cost effective to actually DUMP the product than put the items on clearance and have a massive sale. Atari actually did that back in the day with video game carts and it became a ‘video game myth’ for years.

Begs the question though, this is what happens when you make a Pop figure basically about EVERYTHING….and I MEAN EVERYTHING! I remember seeing Pop figures for a show that lasted probably 5 episodes named ‘Son of Zorn’….like…why? OH well NED, that means they are collectible now!!! Well yea to the collectors market, but Funko is gonna sell the damn thing at regular price…so what do they care?

Funkos were fun for awhile, but they are a collectible that I wouldn’t mind if it just went away. I remember going to C2E2 in Chicago one year and there were MULTIPLE BOOTHS selling WALLS of these things…

If you enjoy it, by all means go for it…but when the company has to resort to just dumping millions of the 18 version of Grogu/Baby Yoda they kept pumping out? Then there is a problem.
