Been awhile since I have seen a movie, but I finally made it back to the theater last night!

I mean hell, getting to a movie is kinda hard nowadays having a kid ya know? $5 movies are now like $45 cause I pay for a babysitter! Last night I was able to get to the theater with a big bucket of popcorn and check out ‘The Suicide Squad’ directed by one of my now favorite directors James Gunn.

As I have been asked a couple of times, this movie has nothing to do with the original ‘Suicide Squad’ by David Ayers, this is a whole NEW one…it may have some same actors, but that’s about it. Mind you, I did see that one and I was bored to all hell as for one thing, I have really no idea who most of the characters are outside of Harley Quinn…but I was excited to see Flula Borg as Javalin and Nathan Fillion as TDK….that being said, my quick review?

‘Lots of gorey laughs and quirked eyebrows.’

It’s a fun movie…I mean, it’s James Gunn basically given the the reigns of the DC Universe saying ‘Hey, just do your thing!’ Good amount of laughter, great action scenes, bloody as all hell in many cases…it had the DC darkness with a Marvel comedy base, or should I say Gunn Comedy Base at this point? Each character was well casted in their roles and you could see that each actor understood their role quite well.

John Cena was great, Idris Elba sells the show better than Will Smith (sorry Will…), Stallone as the Shark Dude was just perfect even though it was just his voice…the main protagonist of the film worked well together. There were even a couple of scenes of character development which made me actually FEEL for each character, which THANK THE LORD that happened, otherwise I would question everyone’s damn motivation! Except for Peacemaker, I can’t remember really what his motivation was….but you kinda find out towards the end.

Remember what I said about quirked eyebrow though? And my excitement to see Nathan Fillion as TDK and Flula Borg as Javalin? I won’t spoil it, but the beginning of the film….the first action scene….like….WHY WAS THAT NECCESASSARY? They’ve been marketing the film so much on these certain characters and then it just FLIPS entirely…and you’re like, ‘Ummm what?’ I’m sure it is intentional, but there could be a variety of ways to introduce Harley into the story and receiving a certain weapon.

After chatting with a friend who reads the comics, he stated that it’s quite up to par with the comics and the character Amanda Waller as she see’s the villain’s as pawns and sending them into a crap show…..with that, I can see it working…but as a general viewer? Threw me off a bit. Whoever created the trailer to the film and the marketing for it? Ya fooled a lot of us that’s for sure.

I’d go see it, and see in a theater….it’s a big movie with big monsters and fun…seeing it on HBO Max I feel kinda robs you of experience. Plus, you’ve been stuck at home all this time, get back to the big screen and see it at a Marcus Theater!
