We finally saw this movie.
After over a year of delays thanks to the COVID pandemic, Ghostbusters Afterlife was finally able to hit the big screen. There are quite a few movies that I was looking forward to, but this one easily topped the list of those…a little background.
I hold Ghostbusters very close to my heart. This franchise was my childhood, and I still love it to this day. Ghostbusters 2 was brand new when I was VERY young, and I have family movies of Christmas mornings around that time of my brother and I opening Ghostbusters 2 toys. Even at my desk is a framed poster of Vigo from GB2. So yea, I have been invested in it for quite some time. I’d go into the whole debacle that is 2016’s Ghostbusters, but that’s too obvious…that being said, the TRUE Ghostbusters 3 is in theaters, and is it worth your time? My quick review….
A beautiful, nostalgic, and emotional love letter to fans.
Dude….it really is. Every single frame of this movie kept your attention looking for recognizable things, however…nostalgia aside? It’s a very well paced and written movie. Mckenna Grace who played as Phoebe? Whoever casted her in that role, deserves a medal…she was PERFECT in that role, she just worked extremely well.
Pacing is a big thing in me for movies, I HATE when I watch a first or second act of a movie and have to re-rack my brain saying, ‘OK what?’ I never once had to do that with this movie. It had character development, I felt for each of the characters, it just worked well. Even Paul Rudd’s character? Was written as US….as a fan of Ghostbusters, which is really hard to inject something like that into an actual movie about…well…Ghostbusters.
There was a sense of discovery, it kept my attention, I wanted to know what happened next. I will point out there is one part regarding a character named Ivo Shandor that just…kinda happens? They could have left that out, and was clearly there for ‘wow factor’ but it’s so small and random that I doesn’t bother me too much.
I won’t spoil the ending, but if you have a connection to Ghostbusters like I did growing up….there is a moment that is going to tug at your heartstrings and maaaaaaaaaaan did the theater go silent during that part cause you could FEEL the tears welling up in mid 30’s to 40’s adults.
If you love Ghostbusters, this is a movie you can’t miss. Jason Reitman was clearly the man for the job on this one, paying tribute to fathers work back in the 80’s. It just had a lot of heart and soul, which we all felt. In order to really understand it, you NEED TO SEE THE FIRST ONE…but, don’t need to see the second.
This will be a blu-ray purchase for me when it releases.
