23 years ago, the beginning of Star Wars occurred.
23 years ago? I was 11 years old and a HUGE Star Wars fan! So a BRAND NEW Star Wars movie coming to theaters? Who wasn’t excited? When this movie was announced that it was coming to theaters…the pop culture world exploded and so did the nerd world. The last Star Wars movie ‘Return of the Jedi’ released in 1983…so yea, the hype was real.
Then it was released and….well….it didn’t go overall very well. Jar Jar, trade federations, questionable ethnic representations…like, it’s not a great movie by any means. However as an 11 year old? I effing loved it, and to this day?
I have a soft spot for it.
When you separate the whole trade federation crap and Jar Jar/Gungans? Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor, Darth Maul were pretty fantastic. If there is something to really get from this movie…it’s the ‘Duel of Fates Jedi Battle.’ That scene to this day is epic as all hell and I’ll even look it up on YouTube just to watch it over and over. Gonna give some love to the Pod Race scene too….whoever did the sound design for that? Applause.
What’s really crappy about it is not the movie…but the fan base…actor Jake Lloyd (Anakin) and Ahmed Best (Jar Jar) were basically tortured by the fan base for the performance to near suicide for the backlash…which is pathetic and sad that the “fans” did that.
It’s not easy to find what is good about Star Wars Episode 1, and as an adult, it’s still kinda fun to watch, especially for nostalgia sake….I mean…think about it this way.
It’s not Episode 2 or most of the Sequel Trilogy.
