You know me, I love a good movie theaters.

Especially the old ones that aren’t corporately owned….sadly many of them have closed down but I always felt those were the most personal places, always told the stories of the people that visited them.

One of those that I have been watching closely? Is the Malek Theatre in Independence, IA. Now, I never personally attended this theater, but I have been following its progress throughout the years, and have driven by it to see the progress that is has been making in its restoration process. According to Wikipedia, it was built in 1947 and closed down in looks like it was closed down sometime in 1985.

However in 2009, the theatre was given a whole new life as it was recognized as a National Historic Places from the Nation Register as it is considered an excellent example of the Art Deco style theatre in the interior and exterior.

A group of awesome individuals formed the Malek Theatre Foundation non-profit to save the theatre and restore it to its former glory! I mentioned this on the air yesterday and received a call from Tony who is a major part of the 501c, which was super cool to hear.
